IPU Placement Preparation Guide: A Year-by-Year Plan That Actually Reflects How Placements Work

Placement season at IPU has a way of arriving before you feel ready for it. One semester you're worrying about internals, and the next there's a company shortlist on the notice board and half your class is suddenly "preparing" in a panic. This guide is the plan I wish someone had handed me in first year — what actually gets filtered, when to start each thing, and what to ignore.

First, understand what placements actually filter on

Most students prepare for placements in the wrong order because they don't know what the funnel looks like. For the majority of on-campus and off-campus hiring, it runs roughly like this:

1. The CGPA/percentage cutoff. Before a human sees anything, many companies filter applications by academic criteria — commonly a minimum CGPA or percentage (and sometimes 10th/12th marks). This is a hard gate: below the cutoff, your resume is never read. It's why your semester marks quietly matter long before placement season. Know your number — check where your CGPA stands and what it converts to.
2. The resume screen — often by software before people. Many recruiters run applications through applicant tracking systems (ATS) or quick human skims that work the same way: keywords, clear structure, evidence. A resume that isn't machine-readable or takes more than seconds to parse loses. This step is brutal and it's where most rejections happen silently. 3. Aptitude/online tests. Quant, logical reasoning, verbal — and for tech roles, coding rounds on platforms with DSA problems. These are practice-sensitive: scores improve fast with reps, which is why starting two weeks before is the classic mistake.
4. Interviews. Technical rounds (projects, DSA, core subjects) and HR rounds. By this point the filters are done — this is where preparation depth and communication decide it.

Does CGPA matter? For the filter, yes — you need to clear cutoffs, and a higher CGPA keeps more doors open. Beyond the filter, it fades fast: interviews run on projects, skills, and how you think. So the strategy is simple: keep CGPA above common cutoff territory so you're never auto-rejected, and spend the surplus effort on skills and projects rather than chasing decimal points. The year-by-year plan

1st year — build the base, no panic. Focus on CGPA (it's easiest to score early and it protects you from cutoffs later), pick up one programming language properly, and start one small project you actually care about. Nothing placement-specific yet — foundation beats frenzy.

2nd year — skills and the first real project. Start DSA seriously (consistency beats intensity — a few problems a week all year crushes a two-week binge), build 1–2 projects with real functionality, and write your first resume now, not in 4th year. A resume you iterate on for two years beats one written overnight.

3rd year — internships and intensity. This is the pivotal year. Apply for internships aggressively — an internship is the single strongest resume line a fresher can have. Ramp DSA to interview level, deepen core subjects (OS, DBMS, CN, OOP — the technical-interview staples), and get your resume ATS-clean and evidence-based. This is also when you should start giving mock interviews, even informal ones.

4th year — convert. Placement season itself: company research, aptitude practice on a schedule, interview reps, and keeping your resume tailored per role rather than one generic PDF for everything. If your earlier years built the base, this year is execution, not desperation.

Mistakes that quietly kill IPU placements

• Writing the resume the night before the first company. The earliest filter gets the least preparation. Backwards.
• One generic resume for every company. Tailoring to the role's keywords is exactly what gets you past screens — software and human.
• Grinding DSA while ignoring core subjects. Interviewers love OS/DBMS/CN questions. DSA gets you in the door; core subjects keep you in the room.
• Treating projects as resume decoration. You will be asked to explain them deeply. A small project you fully understand beats a big one you copied.
• Ignoring off-campus. On-campus is one channel, not the only one. Off-campus applications, referrals, and direct outreach widen the funnel dramatically.
• Starting aptitude prep two weeks out. Test scores are rep-sensitive. Small consistent practice from 3rd year makes 4th-year tests easy.
