What to Actually Do in First Year of Engineering, According to the Job Market You Will Graduate Into

You have just started. Placements are three and a half years away and everyone is already telling you something different — maintain CGPA, do DSA, learn AI, start freelancing, do not worry yet.
Almost none of that advice is based on anything. So here is a different starting point: actual numbers from the market you will walk into. We run a scraper that reads job postings directly from Indian company career boards — the systems employers post their own openings on — and we have measured what those postings ask for. Not opinions about hiring. The postings themselves.
The picture is harsher than the advice suggests, and it points at a much calmer conclusion about what first year is for.

The market you graduate into, measured
In August 2026 we took a snapshot of our entire pool and read the full text of 6,309 live job descriptions across 429 companies hiring in India. Four findings matter to you more than any careers-cell slide will.
Experience is the default demand. 70.2% of live postings demand at least one year, and the median asks for four. Only 1.7% of the entire pool explicitly says a fresher can apply.
“Entry-level” is a title, not a requirement level. Entry-titled roles — associate, junior, trainee, graduate — are 5.0% of the market. Of those that state a number, 82.4% still want a year or more. Senior-titled roles outnumber entry-titled ones ten to one.
A third of what you see is not real. When we measured the age of every posting, 33% had been sitting open for more than 90 days and 7.3% for over a year. A listing that has been up since last summer is not an opportunity.
Stack all three filters and you get 1.4%. Entry-titled, no stated experience bar, and posted in the last 30 days: 91 postings out of 6,309. That is the slice a graduating fresher is genuinely competing inside.
Why this is an argument for calm, not panic
Read those numbers again and notice what they are actually saying. The market does not filter freshers out because they are bad. It filters on evidence of having done the work — and evidence is the one thing that cannot be produced in a hurry.
A fourth-year with three weeks before placements cannot manufacture two years of projects. You can. That is the entire advantage of being where you are, and it expires quietly if you spend three years planning to start.
So the goal for first year is not to prepare for placements. It is to begin accumulating the thing placements will ask you to show.
There is no skill list. Stop looking for it.
The most common question a first-year asks is which technologies to learn. Our data gives an uncomfortable but freeing answer: the list does not exist.
We compared 158,842 pairs of live job postings. Across 494 Software Engineer roles from 143 companies, 278 distinct requirements appear — and the most demanded one, Python, is named by only 45.3%. Not one requirement appears in a majority. Two postings carrying the identical job title share a median of 11% of what they ask for.
Nine out of ten job titles in our pool appear exactly once. The market is not asking for a standard graduate. It is asking 6,000 slightly different questions.
Which means chasing the “right” stack is chasing something that is not there. What survives contact with that variety is narrower and duller:
- One language, properly. Depth transfers; shallow familiarity with four does not. Pick the one your college teaches and get genuinely good at it.
- Data structures and algorithms. The one thing that appears across almost every technical screen regardless of stack.
- Git, and working in the open. Version control appears constantly in postings and costs an afternoon to learn.
- Finishing things. A small project that is complete and deployed beats three that are 70% done. Finishing is a skill and almost nobody practises it.
Specific frameworks are learnable in a few weeks once those are in place. That is why they are the wrong thing to panic about in first year.
What about CGPA?
Nothing in 6,309 job descriptions asked for a CGPA figure. Not one.
That does not make it irrelevant — it makes it a different kind of thing. CGPA is an eligibility gate your college applies before you reach the employer, commonly at 6.5 or 7.0. Below the gate it costs you the chance to sit. Above it, it stops differentiating you, because the employer is reading a resume that does not mention it.
The practical rule: clear your college’s threshold with enough margin that one bad semester cannot sink you, then stop optimising the number. The hours you would spend moving 8.2 to 8.6 are worth more spent on something you can show. We have written more on how projects trade off against CGPA at IPU specifically.
A three-year shape, not a first-year checklist
First year. One language to real depth. Basic DSA. Git. Build two small things end to end and put them somewhere public. Clear your CGPA gate. That is the whole list — it is deliberately short, because the failure mode at this stage is doing five things badly.
Second year. Start applying for internships once you have one finished project to point at. This is the door that is actually open: of 109 internship, trainee and apprentice postings, only 5 demanded prior experience. The problem is supply — they were 1.7% of the pool — so apply early and put real effort into each one rather than sending an identical resume to fifty.
Third year. One substantial project or a real internship. This is when the evidence has to become specific to a direction. It is also when placement preparation starts being worth the hours, and not before.
Fourth year. Everything you did above, written down properly. A campus placement resume is a compression problem, not a creation problem — which is only true if there is something to compress.
What we are not telling you
Three honest limits. Our sample is companies that publish on their own applicant tracking systems, which skews towards organised, tech-forward employers and away from the smaller firms that hire a large share of Indian graduates. Campus placement is a separate channel from the open market we measure, and it plays by partly different rules. And we read what postings say, which is not always what gets someone hired.
None of that changes the direction of the finding. A market where the median ask is four years of experience does not become a market that rewards last-minute preparation.
The one genuinely good piece of news: you are reading this in first year. Most people find these numbers out in their seventh semester, when the only remaining variable is how well they can describe what they already did.
