How to Prepare for IPU End-Sem Exams (The Full-Syllabus Strategy That Actually Works)
Published on July 13, 2026 • 5 min read
End-sems at IPU are a different animal from mid-sems. The syllabus is the whole thing, not half of it. The paper comes from the university, not your teacher. And 60 of your 100 marks per subject are decided across a couple of high-pressure weeks. Here's how to prepare for that — realistically, and specifically for how IPU works.
What you're actually walking into
At IPU, every theory subject is marked out of 100: 40 internal + 60 external. The end-term exam is that 60 — the single biggest chunk of marks in every subject you take. Unlike your internals, it's set and evaluated through the university, and it covers the entire syllabus — every unit is fair game.
One thing many students don't realize: IPU sets a unified syllabus and conducts unified end-term exams across all its affiliated colleges.Whether you're at MAIT, ADGITM, BPIT, or any other IPU college, you sit the same end-term paper for the same subject. There's no "easier paper" at a smaller college — which also means PYQs from anywhere in the IPU system are directly useful to you.
And the passing math: most theory subjects need 40% in the end-term and 40% in aggregate (theory + internal). If your internals were strong, you walk in with a cushion. If they weren't, the end-term has to do the lifting — all the more reason to prepare it properly.
PYQs matter even more here than in mid-sems
The single most useful fact about IPU end-terms: the papers repeat.
An analysis of roughly 180 IPU end-term papers from 2015 to 2025 found that in most subjects, about 8 to 12 topics appear in 6 or more of the last 10 papers — and those topics carry a disproportionate share of the marks. In quantitative subjects like Data Structures, DBMS, Operating Systems, and Maths, the same numerical problem types return year after year with different values.
For mid-sems you could get away with knowing half the syllabus well. For end-sems you can't skip units — but you can be smart about depth:
- Pull the last 5–10 years of end-term PYQs for each subject.
- Mark what keeps recurring — topics and question types both.
- Master the recurring set first: solve them cold, by hand, no notes.
- Then cover the remaining units to a "can attempt it" level — not mastery, coverage.
Depth on the repeaters, coverage on the rest. That's the whole strategy in one line.
A realistic multi-subject plan
End-sems aren't one exam — they're 5–6 papers in a compressed window, so the plan has to be about allocation, not just effort.
~3 weeks out: Collect syllabi and PYQs for every subject. Rank your subjects: strongest to weakest. Most students over-study their favorite subject and under-study the scary one — decide your time split deliberately, weakest subjects get more days.
~2 weeks out: Work subject by subject through the recurring PYQ topics. Numericals by hand, every time. Build a one-page formula/definition sheet per subject as you go — you're building your revision kit now, not later.
Final week: Switch from learning to attempting. Full PYQ papers under time pressure, one per subject. This is where you find out what you think you know versus what you can actually produce in three hours.
Between papers (the gap days): One subject per gap, revision sheets + 1–2 PYQs. Nothing new. Sleep beats a fifth revision pass.
Mistakes that cost IPU students end-sem marks
- Treating it like a big mid-sem. Full syllabus means unit coverage matters — you can't bet on half the paper.
- Uniform time per subject. Your weakest subject at 40% risk deserves more hours than your strongest at 75% comfort.
- Reading solutions instead of writing them. Under a 3-hour clock, only what your hand can produce counts.
- Skipping the aggregate math. Know what you need in each subject given your internals — it changes where your effort should go.
- Burning the gap days. The days between papers are where ranks are made. One subject, revision kit, sleep.
Quick FAQ
How much are IPU end-sems worth?
60 of the 100 marks in each theory subject — the external, university-conducted component. The other 40 come from internals.
Is the end-term paper the same across all IPU colleges?
Yes — IPU sets a unified syllabus and conducts unified end-term exams across its affiliated colleges, government and private alike. Same subject, same paper.
Do end-sem marks affect my CGPA?
They're the biggest single input to it. Your end-term + internal marks become your grade in each subject, which drives your SGPA and CGPA. You can see exactly where your CGPA stands with our IPU CGPA calculator.
What should I study first?
Recurring PYQ topics, subject by subject, weakest subjects getting the most days. Coverage on everything, depth on the repeaters.
