How IPU calculates CGPA (the short answer)

GGSIPU uses a 10-point, credit-weighted grading system. Your SGPA for a semester is the sum of (grade point × credits) for every subject, divided by the total credits that semester. Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all your SGPAs. To convert CGPA to percentage:

• Admitted before 2024: Percentage = CGPA × 10 (Ordinance 11). Example: 8.5 CGPA → 85%.
• Admitted 2024 or later: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Example: 8.5 CGPA → (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%.

Why the formula changed in 2024

In January 2024, GGSIPU issued notification GGSIPU/COE/2024/11150124 (dated 15.01.2024) switching the CGPA-to-percentage conversion for new admissions to (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, bringing the university in line with UGC-style conversion used by several other Indian universities. Students admitted before 2024 continue to use the older CGPA × 10 rule from Ordinance 11 — so two students with the same CGPA can legitimately report different percentages depending on their batch.

SGPA vs. CGPA — not the same number

SGPA covers a single semester. CGPA is the cumulative figure across every semester completed so far, and it is the number the placement cell and recruiters filter on.

The consequence worth understanding early: the more semesters you have completed, the harder your CGPA becomes to move. A strong sixth-semester SGPA barely shifts a CGPA built from five previous semesters, because it is one input among many. Students planning to "fix it later" usually find the arithmetic does not cooperate — the leverage is highest in the first two years, which is exactly when most people take it least seriously.

Credits change the weighting

Your CGPA is a credit-weighted average, not a plain mean of your subject grades. Each subject carries a credit value, and a 4-credit theory paper moves your CGPA twice as much as a 2-credit lab does. This is why the result sometimes surprises students who averaged their grades by hand.

Practically, it means the heavyweight theory papers deserve disproportionate attention during the semester. A slip in a 4-credit subject is genuinely harder to recover from than one in a 1-credit workshop, and knowing which is which at the start of the term is worth more than any revision strategy at the end of it.

Which number to put on your resume

Use the CGPA on the scale IPU issues it — "CGPA 8.24/10" — rather than converting to a percentage, unless an employer explicitly asks. Recruiters hiring from Delhi-NCR colleges read the 10-point scale fluently, and a bare converted number invites questions about which formula you used.

• State the scale. "8.24" alone is ambiguous; "8.24/10" is not.
• Give both if a form demands a percentage, and name the basis: "CGPA 8.24/10 (≈78.28%, as per IPU formula)."
• Applying abroad? Add the approximate 4-point equivalent, since overseas recruiters cannot read a 10-point scale.
• Never round upward. Marksheets get verified at onboarding, and an inflated figure is exactly the kind of discrepancy that ends an offer.

If your CGPA is below the usual cutoffs

Most campus recruiters at IPU set a filter somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5. Below that threshold, no amount of resume work gets you into those particular processes — which is worth accepting rather than fighting, because the energy is better spent elsewhere.

What works is going around the filter rather than through it: off-campus applications where no cutoff applies, referrals from seniors already placed, and startups that screen on demonstrable skill instead of academics. In all three, a portfolio of working projects carries far more weight than the number. Plenty of IPU students with mid-range CGPAs place well through these routes every year — but only the ones who started early enough to have something built and shipped before placement season arrived.
