When an interviewer asks, "Why do you want to work here?" they already know you want a paycheck. That is a given. What they are actually asking is: "Of all the places you could get a paycheck, why did you apply to us specifically?"
If your answer is "You have a great culture and offer good growth opportunities," you have failed. That answer applies to literally any company on earth. It proves you did zero research.
The 3-Part Formula for the Perfect Answer
A memorable answer proves you researched the company, aligns your goals with theirs, and ends by emphasizing what you can do for them.
- Part 1: The Specific Detail. Mention something specific you learned about the company that isn't just their homepage slogan. A recent product launch, an article their CEO wrote, or a specific technical challenge they are facing.
- Part 2: The Personal Connection. Explain why that specific detail resonates with you professionally or personally.
- Part 3: The Value Add. Connect it back to how your specific skills will help them achieve their goals.
How to Research Properly
Stop looking at the "About Us" page. Look at:
- Recent News: Search the company in Google News. What did they announce in the last three months?
- The Engineering/Product Blog: If you are in tech, what challenges are their engineers writing about?
- Leadership Interviews: Listen to a podcast featuring the CEO or a VP. What are they obsessed with right now?

That signals a culture that genuinely cares about continuous learning. The Follow-Up Trap
Sometimes interviewers ask: "What do you know about us?" before asking why you want to work there. Do not give your "why" answer yet. Keep it factual: "You are a series B SaaS company specializing in X, currently expanding into Y." Save the personal connection for the actual "why" question.
