How to Crack an Interview at a Product Company in India (Amazon, Flipkart, Razorpay, CRED)

Published on May 13, 2026 • 9 min read

Clearing a product company interview in India is not about working harder — it is about understanding what they are actually testing and preparing specifically for that. The candidate who spends 6 months grinding LeetCode randomly will lose to the candidate who spends 3 months targeting the right topics with the right method.

Here is the complete playbook for Indian product companies.

Product Company vs Service Company Interviews: Why They Are Completely Different

At a service company (Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant), interviews test basic programming competence, communication, and whether you can work on client projects. The bar is standard and the process is structured for volume hiring.

At a product company (Flipkart, Razorpay, CRED, PhonePe, Swiggy), they are hiring for engineering excellence, system-level thinking, and problem-solving speed under pressure. The same preparation that gets you through a service company OA will fail in round 2 of a Razorpay DSA interview.

The Product Company Interview Structure

Most Indian product companies follow a similar pipeline:

  1. Online Assessment (OA): 2–3 DSA problems, 60–90 minutes. Automated filter. Most candidates fail here.
  2. DSA Rounds (1–2): Live coding with interviewer. 1 medium + 1 hard LeetCode equivalent.
  3. System Design Round: Design a system at scale. Expected at SDE-2+ level universally, sometimes at SDE-1.
  4. Hiring Manager Round: Mix of technical depth and behavioral. They are assessing cultural fit and how you think.
  5. HR Round: Compensation discussion, joining timeline, background check setup.

DSA Preparation: What Actually Works

The Neetcode 150 list (neetcode.io) is the most efficient preparation path. It covers the 150 problems that collectively cover every pattern you will encounter. Do not grind 500 random LeetCode problems — you will cover the same patterns repeatedly without systematic coverage.

Priority topics by frequency in Indian product company interviews:

  • Arrays and Strings (highest frequency): Two pointers, sliding window, prefix sums.
  • Trees and Graphs: BFS, DFS, topological sort. Almost always appears in round 2.
  • Dynamic Programming: Expected at Flipkart, Amazon, and Swiggy. Minimum 20 DP problems.
  • Heaps and Priority Queues: K-th element problems, merge K sorted lists.
  • Recursion and Backtracking: Combinations, permutations, N-Queens.

Timeline: If you practice 2–3 problems daily, 8 weeks covers the Neetcode 150. Do not skip the medium problems. Easy problems do not appear in product company interviews.

System Design for Indian Product Companies

What Flipkart, Razorpay, and CRED ask is different from full FAANG-level system design. They focus on practical, India-scale problems: design a payment processing system, design a notification service for 10M users, design a search system for an e-commerce catalogue.

Key differences from FAANG system design:

  • India-scale means 10M–100M users, not 1B. Your throughput estimates should reflect this.
  • Focus more on availability and consistency trade-offs than on exotic distributed systems.
  • Razorpay specifically asks about payment processing — understand idempotency, retry mechanisms, and money transfer reliability.
  • CRED interviews often touch on credit scoring, data pipelines, and member experience personalization.

Behavioral Rounds at Product Companies

Indian product companies use STAR-format behavioral interviews — they are not informal chats. Amazon uses Leadership Principles explicitly. Flipkart and Swiggy ask about ownership, learning from failure, and handling ambiguity.

Prepare 8–10 STAR stories that can flex across multiple questions. Your best stories should demonstrate: a technical decision you owned, a time you disagreed with your manager and what happened, a project that failed and what you learned, and a cross-functional collaboration challenge.

Company-Specific Research

Read the engineering blog of the company you are interviewing at. Flipkart Tech, Razorpay Engineering on Medium, CRED Engineering — all of these publish technical deep dives. Referencing one in your system design round shows you have done homework that 95% of candidates skip.

Also: know their current product in detail. Download the app. Use it. Know what features were recently launched. Interviewers notice when candidates have clearly never used their product.

Compensation at Indian Product Companies in 2026

  • SDE-1: Flipkart ₹25–35 LPA, Razorpay ₹22–30 LPA, Swiggy ₹20–28 LPA, Zepto ₹20–28 LPA, CRED ₹28–40 LPA
  • SDE-2: Flipkart ₹40–65 LPA, Razorpay ₹38–55 LPA, Swiggy ₹35–55 LPA, CRED ₹45–70 LPA
  • SDE-3/Senior: ₹60–1.2 Cr at most of these companies, depending on equity and scope

ESOPs are a meaningful component at all of these companies. Always ask for the equity component breakdown and the vesting schedule before comparing offers.
