Switching Jobs in India? Here's How to Update Your Resume the Right Way
Published on May 25, 2026 • 5 min read
The average tenure for professionals in India is decreasing, especially in tech and marketing. Whether you're looking for a higher salary, a better role, or just a change of scene, your resume is your most powerful tool. But many people make the mistake of just "adding the new job" to the top of an old resume.
1. Audit Your Old Bullet Points
The things you did 3 years ago might not be relevant to the role you want now. Rewrite your old experience to reflect the seniority or specific skills required for your next job. If you're moving from a Developer to a Lead role, emphasize the times you mentored others in your previous roles.
2. Refresh Your Skills Section
The tools you used two years ago might be outdated. Ensure your skills section reflects the current industry standard. If you've been working with a new stack, make sure it's prominent.
3. Handle Short Tenures Strategically
In the Indian market, "job hopping" is still viewed with some skepticism. If you have a short tenure (less than a year), briefly mention the reason (e.g., "Company restructuring" or "Contractual role") to alleviate recruiter concerns.
4. Tailor for the Target Company
Applying to a large MNC like Infosys requires a different resume than applying to a high-growth startup like Zepto. One values stability and process; the other values speed and ownership. Tailor your language accordingly.
5. When to Delete Old Experience
If you have more than 5 years of experience, it's time to start trimming. Your college internship or your first job after graduation doesn't need 5 bullet points. A single line is often enough, or you can remove it entirely if it's irrelevant.
Get the Notice Period Onto the Page
Notice periods in India run from 30 to 90 days, and they are a genuine filter rather than an administrative detail. Recruiters hiring against an urgent requirement will skip a 90-day candidate regardless of quality, and they will not ask before skipping.
If your notice is short, or you are already serving it, that is a competitive advantage and belongs in your header: "Available in 30 days" or "Serving notice — available from 15 March." If it is 90 days, mention any buyout option, since many employers will fund it for a candidate they want. Leaving it unstated means the assumption defaults to the worst case.
Rewrite the Summary for Where You Are Going
The summary on a job-change resume is usually a description of the job you currently hold, which is exactly backwards. Its purpose is to make the case for the next role, using your history as evidence rather than as the subject.
- ❌ Describes the past: "Experienced software engineer with 5 years at a leading IT services company working on client projects."
- ✅ Argues for the future: "Backend engineer, 5 years building payments and reconciliation systems at scale. Looking to move into product engineering where I own a service end to end."
The second version tells the reader what you want and why you are credible for it. It also filters out roles you do not want, which is a feature rather than a cost.
Search Discreetly While Employed
Most job changes in India happen while still employed, and the practical risk of being discovered is real — particularly in IT services, where your own employer's talent team may be searching the same databases you are visible in.
- Use LinkedIn's recruiters-only Open to Work setting rather than the public green frame.
- Turn off activity broadcasts before overhauling your profile, so a burst of edits does not appear in colleagues' feeds.
- Use a personal email and phone number, never your work address, on any application.
- Be careful with your current manager as a reference. Offer references at offer stage, and say so explicitly rather than listing them.
- Do not describe confidential work in detail. Convey scale and outcome without naming what you are not free to name.
Know What You Are Actually Moving For
Every interview in a job change eventually asks why you are leaving, and a vague answer is the most common way a strong candidate loses momentum. "Looking for growth" is heard so frequently that it registers as having no reason at all.
Decide privately what the real driver is — compensation, scope, technology, management, stability, location — then convert it into a forward-looking statement rather than a complaint. "I want ownership of a product area rather than a slice of a client engagement" is honest, specific, and impossible to argue with. It also gives the interviewer something concrete to sell you on, which is the outcome you want from the question.
