The green "#OpenToWork" photo frame divides opinion sharply. Some career coaches call it a desperation signal. Others say it is the single easiest thing you can do to get more recruiter messages.
The truth is more nuanced — and it depends entirely on which version of the feature you are using and what your situation actually is.
What Open to Work Actually Does — Two Very Different Modes
There are two separate configurations for LinkedIn's Open to Work feature, and most people do not realize they are different:
- Public Green Banner: Adds the green "#OpenToWork" ring around your profile photo, visible to everyone — including your current employer, colleagues, and everyone in your network.
- Recruiters Only (Private Mode): Signals your availability exclusively to LinkedIn Recruiter users — the paid tool used by professional recruiters. Your profile photo stays unchanged. Your current employer typically cannot see this signal.
LinkedIn says it makes "every effort" to prevent your current employer from seeing the recruiter-only signal, but it is not a guarantee if your employer has Recruiter Lite accounts.
The Stigma Debate: Does It Make You Look Desperate?
Some hiring managers genuinely do view the green banner negatively — particularly at the senior level, where there is an expectation that strong candidates are found, not searching.
But the data consistently shows the banner increases recruiter messages by a meaningful amount for the majority of users. For most professionals — especially at the mid-level and below — the benefit of increased inbound visibility outweighs the social perception risk.
The exception: if you are a C-suite executive or a senior leader being actively headhunted, the public banner can undermine your leverage. Use the recruiter-only setting instead.
Who Should Use the Public Banner
- Freshers and entry-level candidates — the banner provides a meaningful discoverability boost with minimal reputational risk
- Anyone who was recently laid off — your network already knows; signaling availability speeds up inbound help
- People between contracts or freelance engagements
- Mid-level professionals who are not currently employed
Who Should Use the Recruiter-Only Setting
- Anyone who is currently employed and conducting a confidential search
- Senior professionals concerned about optics with their current employer or clients
- Executives and directors where passive candidate status matters to positioning
How to Configure It Properly
Go to your LinkedIn profile → click the "Open to" button below your name → select "Finding a new job." You will then see these key fields — fill all of them accurately:
- Job titles: Add 3–5 specific target roles using exact titles recruiters search for.
- Location preferences: Include remote, hybrid, and your geographic preference. The more specific, the more relevant your inbound messages will be.
- Start date: "Immediately" vs "Flexible." Immediately gets you more urgent responses. Flexible is appropriate if you have notice period requirements.
- Job type: Full-time, part-time, contract, internship — check all that genuinely apply.
- Who can see you are open: Choose "Recruiters only" or "All LinkedIn members."
The Alternative: Signal Availability Without the Banner
If you want recruiter attention without any badge, your headline and About section can do the signaling:
- Add "Open to [Target Role] opportunities" at the end of your headline
- Close your About section with "Currently exploring [role type] positions — DM me or reach me at [email]"
- Engage actively with content in your target industry — commenting and posting increases your profile views organically
This approach takes more effort than toggling a setting, but it positions you as an active professional rather than someone waiting to be rescued.
