How to Reformat Your Indian Resume for Jobs Abroad — US, UK, Canada, Gulf
Published on June 17, 2026 • 6 min read
If you're using a standard Indian "biodata" or a colorful 3-page template to apply for jobs in North America or Europe, you are getting instantly rejected. International markets have very strict expectations for resumes. Here is how you must change your Indian resume to succeed abroad.
Remove Personal Information (Strict Rule for US/UK/Canada)
Due to strict anti-discrimination laws, you MUST remove your photo, date of birth, gender, marital status, religion, and father's name. Including any of these in a US or UK resume will often cause the recruiter to delete your file immediately to avoid liability. Keep only your Name, Phone Number, Email, and LinkedIn.
The Gulf Market Exception
If you are applying to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, or other Gulf nations, the rules are slightly different. These markets often DO prefer a professional photograph and a mention of nationality and date of birth. Tailor accordingly.
One Page is the Standard
Unless you have over 10 years of highly technical experience, keep your resume to one single page. North American recruiters value conciseness. Cut the lengthy objective statement and replace it with a 3-line professional summary.
What Changes by Market — A Quick Reference
"Abroad" is not one standard. The four markets Indian candidates apply to most have genuinely different conventions, and using the wrong one signals you have not researched the country you want to move to.
- United States: One page. No photo, no age, no marital status. Called a "resume." Month/Year dates. No address beyond city and state — recruiters do not need your full street address.
- United Kingdom: Two pages is normal and expected. Called a "CV." No photo. A short personal statement at the top is standard practice rather than optional.
- Canada: One to two pages. No photo. Recruiters look for Canadian equivalency on education, and volunteering is viewed more favourably than in most markets.
- Gulf (UAE, Saudi, Qatar): Two to three pages is accepted. Photo, nationality, date of birth and visa status are commonly expected — the opposite of the US rule.
Translate Your Credentials, Don't Just List Them
A recruiter in Toronto or Austin does not know what "10+2" means, cannot convert a CGPA out of 10, and does not know which Indian universities are selective. Untranslated credentials read as noise and get skipped.
- CGPA: Convert and show both — "CGPA 8.4/10 (equivalent to ~3.4/4.0 GPA)." Never leave a bare "8.4" on the page.
- 10+2: Write "Higher Secondary Certificate (equivalent to US High School Diploma)." Better still, drop schooling entirely once you have a degree.
- Salary figures: Remove them. Lakhs and crores mean nothing abroad, and listing current salary is considered unusual in the US and UK regardless.
- Company context: "Led billing for a 400-person NBFC" means little overseas. Add scale a stranger can parse — revenue, headcount, or user numbers.
Address Work Authorization Directly
This is the single question every overseas recruiter has when they see an Indian address, and leaving it unanswered is the most common reason a qualified application dies silently. Do not make them guess.
If you already hold status, say so in the header: "Authorized to work in the UK (Graduate Route, valid to 2028)." If you need sponsorship, be upfront — "Requires H-1B sponsorship" — because it filters you out of roles that were never going to work and keeps you in the pipeline for employers who sponsor as a matter of routine. Candidates who hide it usually get discovered at the screening call, which wastes everyone's time and burns the relationship.
Fix the Small Formatting Tells
Several habits that are completely normal on an Indian resume immediately mark the document as foreign, and they cost you credibility before anyone reads your experience.
- Dates: Indian DD/MM/YYYY is read as MM/DD/YYYY in the US. Use unambiguous "Mar 2024 – Jun 2026" instead.
- Phone number: Always include the country code: +91 98xxxxxxxx. Without it, an international recruiter cannot dial you.
- Spelling: Pick one convention and hold it. "Optimised" for UK, "optimized" for US and Canada. Mixing both looks careless.
- "Curriculum Vitae" as a heading: Drop it. Your name is the heading. Titling the document is an outdated convention everywhere you are applying.
- References available on request: Delete this line. It wastes a row and every recruiter assumes it.
